How to choose a dew point meter

This page is an unofficial buyer's guide. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Amazon, AWS, API, or AMPP. It is not a review written for hire. Links below are placeholders. They are not live, and they are not product recommendations.

This page is for someone who has to decide whether steel is about to sweat before a coating goes on. The decision is four facts together: air temperature, humidity, dew point calculated from those two, and the temperature of the steel. The margin, how much warmer the steel must be than the dew point, is written in the project specification or the product data sheet. This page does not supply a margin. A margin remembered from a different product is a good way to coat a wet surface.

There is no best dew point meter here. There is a meter you can check, with a probe that actually touches the steel, showing all four facts at the time you coat.

What the instrument is for

Dew point is a property of the air. It is the temperature where moisture will condense. The steel is a separate measurement. A cold wall in warm air is the usual surprise: the air feels fine, and the steel is below the dew point. Any kit that cannot put a sensor on the steel is not finished, no matter how confident the humidity number looks.

A reading at the start of the shift does not cover a coat-out after lunch. You want a meter you can use quickly, in the place the steel actually is, including sun and shade. Those two places can disagree by enough to change the decision.

Types

All-in-one field meter. Air temperature, relative humidity, a calculated dew point, and a surface probe, often a thermocouple you hold on the steel or a magnetic probe that stays put on carbon steel. This is the usual kit when a specification wants the set recorded often. Look for a screen that shows the four values at once, so you are not paging through modes while the steel heats in the sun.

Separate instruments. A humidity meter plus a contact thermometer, and a calculation you can show, if the specification allows that method. Slower. Honest, if you write the calculation instead of doing it in your head for the record. Do not buy this pair to save money and then skip the surface half.

Sling psychrometer. A real method, still named on some older jobs. It needs the technique, clean water, and a correct reading of both bulbs. If you have never been shown how to use one, a digital meter you can check is a better purchase than a sling you will misuse. Owning the sling does not create the skill.

Not this instrument. A pin meter sold for lumber, a wall-moisture scanner, or a weather gadget with no surface probe. The word moisture on the box is not a qualification. If it cannot give you a dew point and a steel temperature you can write down, it is the wrong tool for this decision.

Alarms are only as honest as the number you typed

Some meters let you set an alarm at a margin. Useful, and dangerous if you never look. The number you enter is the margin from today's specification or today's data sheet. It is not the factory default, and it is not the last product you sprayed. A meter that hides the alarm setting is a worse buy than a simpler meter that makes you look at the four values.

What to check before you pay

Mistakes that waste the purchase

Buying a humidity-only meter and calling it a dew point inspection. Clipping the surface probe to your shirt and recording that as steel. Leaving the factory alarm margin in place. Taking one reading in the shade and coating the sunny side an hour later. Writing "conditions OK" because the buttons were pressed.

What this page will not do

It will not state a dew-point margin. It will not name a model as the one to own. It will not quote a price or claim that a given meter is sold on Amazon. Familiar maker names are examples of the category, not an endorsement.

Follow the project specification, the product data sheet, and the meter maker's instructions.
